How to make money online as a kid for free. You wouldn’t believe how many times I searched this exact keyword phrase up in Google when I was about 10 to 13 years old. As a kid, I was desperate for money so that I could buy the new game I wanted or the new console to play on.
But if you’re a kid, you would know how difficult it is to get your hands on some money. I barely ever saw money. I had no allowance, no job, and I didn’t want to go outside and mow people’s lawns for 5 bucks.
So if you’re like me and want to earn money without having to hustle outside and directly talk to adults face-to-face, then you’re in the right place.
This blog post will be a great starting point for you to generate some ideas on how you can make money online as a kid for free.
Actually, it might even help you generate ideas as an adult as well! If you’re an adult and reading this, don’t leave either, many of these ideas are things you could do to-.
Point Systems And Rewards, Easy To Set-Up
Every time I searched up how to make money online as a kid for free, blogs talking about making money from taking surveys and downloading apps came up.
I took the time to read some of these blog posts and try out some of their methods, and it was pretty legit! I was earning cash playing mobile games and taking surveys without spending a single cent.
There is a catch, though. I was earning next to nothing for the amount of time I was spending!
But despite only earning a few cents from each survey or a few dollars from each app, things can be quite rewarding over time with some people being able to stack up thousands of dollars after years of consistently using these point systems.
And that’s a lot of money for a kid.
Swagbucks is my favorite point system, and I have made a few bucks with it myself. It is entirely free to set-up, and you can immediately start to take surveys, watch videos, and download apps for points in the form of SB, which can be later cashed out for gift cards and cash via Paypal.
If you’re interested in making money with Swagbucks, check out the link below.
Things are limited to Swagbucks, though, as there are plenty of other point systems out there. Feature points, MooCash, Survey Junkie, and PaidViewPoint are just a few.
Although I have used some of these apps, I haven’t used them enough to recommend or review them on this website thoroughly. I will, however, link some of the reviews here when I’m ready.
The general gist with these systems is the same. You will take surveys, watch videos, download apps, and do other things the point systems have to get points that can be cashed out for money later on.
The problem is that you will earn really slow money. You’ll at most get a few hundred bucks a month, but be warned, that is not common, and most often, earning $10 to $20 will be most common if you actually use the websites.
If you have nothing to do at home, this is an excellent way to build some spare cash on the side either to save for something you want to buy, or a handful of start-up cash to use to make more money later on.
There are people who, over 3 years, have used these sites to get around $4,000, which they then used as funds for online courses and business funds. They now earn full-time with their businesses and do not need to go take surveys or download apps continually.
Selling Your Old Stuff, One Person’s Trash, Another’s Treasure
If you want to make more than a few cents a day or a handful of cash a month, try looking through some old things you have stopped using and sell them online.
Here are some ideas on old things you could sell:
- Old clothes that don’t fit anymore
- Old sports equipment that isn’t used anymore (e.g., soccer shoes, hockey helmets, shin pads, etc.)
- Books you have stopped reading
- Old toys that are still in good condition (e.g., Nerf guns, plushies, remote-controlled cars, etc.)
- Video game consoles (e.g., Xbox, Nintendo DS, PS4, etc.)
- Lots more…
One person’s trash is another person’s treasure!
Sometimes the very things we throw away are things that other people would pay money for.
The old baby clothes that you can’t wear are clothes that the pregnant woman in the neighborhood would buy.
If you have quite a bit of random stuff, you can make quite a lot of money with this method without spending much effort either.
What would an extra hundred dollars do for you? An extra thousand?
Unlike the point system method, you don’t have to spend all your time doing this. All you need to do is take a few good pictures of your stuff and then post it on a few websites such as Kijiji and Craigslist.
Then when someone is interested, make the sale and exchange, which would at most take a few hours and then be on with your day.
Generally, make sure that the stuff you want to sell is in decent condition. Because sometimes there really isn’t a point to sell a Nerf gun that can’t shoot anymore.
You should also generally charge lower prices on the items you are selling. Never sell your old stuff at their retail price even if you have never touched the product. When people are looking for used items, they’re looking for it because used is cheaper than new.
So unless you’re holding a vintage first-generation Pokemon card set, the average prices you should set on your items range between $5 and $20 for clothing, sports equipment, toys, and books, and then around $50 to $100 for video game consoles.
Make sure you check on the prices other people are setting for their used products first, though. Prices can significantly range for your old stuff.
When you figure out what kinds of things you want to sell and have taken a few good pictures, it’s time to create your posts.
There are various strategies you can implement to make your offer more attractive as well as some tips I want to tell you to help you sell your old stuff and get some money.
1. Be Open To Negotiations
When you’re selling your old stuff, you should expect that people are going to bargain with you. Don’t just shut them down when they do either.
Talk to them and be okay to sell things lower than your list price. It’s okay to sell something at $3 versus $5.
If they want to do something like buy your PS4 for $10 when you have it listed at $100, that’s a situation where you can tell them no and wait for other buyers.
Make sure you are polite and friendly, even when the people you talk to are not.
Talk to them with a smile and socialize with them. This keeps deals open to further contact, and it’s just good for human beings to be courteous to other people.
Know the value of the stuff you sell, and it will make life a lot easier. By doing research on what has sold before and what is currently listed, you can compare it to your own listing and also show your customer too.
2. Post On Multiple Sites
It will take a little bit of extra work where you have to put up more posts, monitor them, and shut multiple ones off when you’ve made a sale, but it’s worth it.
When you can reach more people, you can sell your product a lot faster and for a higher price.
3. Have Detailed Descriptions And Good Pictures In Your Post
Don’t be lazy and write something like, “Nerf gun for sale.” Be detailed in your description and talk about its condition, potential scratches or damage, how much it was used, and sizing if it’s clothing/wearables.
Also, talk about the payments you accept, your contact information, and that you’re open to negotiations on the price. Buyers will become more interested, and they will have a way to get to you if they’re interested.
Make sure you also take pictures from all angles in good lighting with a background that’s not distracting to show exactly what your potential buyer would receive if they buy your product.
It’s important to let your buyer know everything they’re getting into. This way, every buyer that directly contacts you are people who genuinely might buy your stuff and already know about damages and sizes.
4. Upsell Your Buyers
When your buyer meets you in person and buys your item, you can upsell them.
First, talk to them about their lives and learn more about them. If they’re buying baby clothes, it’s highly likely that they have a baby or one that is coming soon. So if you have any up-to-date car seats for babies or other accessories, you can try to sell them on those items.
Likewise, if they’re buying a Nerf gun from you and you have a collection, you can try to sell more Nerf guns to the same person. Or if they’re buying a console, offer some games for the console to them.
Buyers are buyers. When someone has bought from you already, there is a high chance they might buy from you again if the experience was good. And if you followed some of the tips above, their experience should have been good.
By upselling, you can get rid of stuff in your house faster and earn more from each individual buyer.
Got any tips that I should talk about? Leave them in the comment section down below!
Usually, you want to sell old things locally, especially if you’re setting low prices on them. You do not want to cover for shipping or travel expenses and end up spending more than how much you’re selling your stuff at!
So this means when you sell things online, you have to find the websites or apps designed for selling in your designated city or neighborhood rather than use things like Amazon and eBay to sell items.
I personally live in Calgary, AB Canada, at the time of writing this post, so such websites that allow me to sell locally would be Kijiji, VarageSale, and Letgo.
You can also look into local Facebook groups and other social media platforms to see if there is anyone interested in buying your stuff as well as ask around in your and your parents’ friend groups to see if anyone is needing anything.
Many of these sites require people to pick up or send products and collect payment in person. This can be daunting for a kid, especially when we hear of stories where people are kidnapped or murdered when selling on sites like Kijiji.
So I would say that it is a must for you to have a trustworthy adult with you when you’re in the selling process; even as an adult. Just for safety reasons.
Freelancing, The Online Version Of Shoveling Snow
Do you have a skill that you’re good at?
Coding? Writing? Digital drawing? Graphic design?
People pay good money for these kinds of skills.
I’ve spent a few hundred dollars before to have people design t-shirts, logos, and email signatures. And there are tons more people out there who spend money paying for other things like video editing, marketing, or even health coaching.
What skill do you have that you can use for others?
If you have any design skills, marketing skills, writing skills, coding skills, or others, you could use these skills and get paid for doing them.
For example, if someone you know needs an app built, you could charge them $1,000 or even more to make one for them.
Of course, you need to have the skills first.
Don’t worry if you don’t have any expertise right now, you could spend some time using free tutorials on YouTube and Googling blogs to learn how to do certain things and then practicing it on your own whenever you have time.
If you have a little bit of money, you could check out multiple online courses or training platforms and learn how to use these skills. For example, let’s say you wanted to learn SEO and content marketing.
One of the best places to do this is Wealthy Affiliate.
You can actually head over to Wealthy Affiliate for free and build two free websites where you can play around with SEO and try writing a few blog posts.
As a starter member at Wealthy Affiliate, you will get access to some training that will help you learn some of the primary website building and how to get people to your website methods.
Things get really good when you go premium, though, as you will gain access to all the training on the platform.
Although Wealthy Affiliate primarily teaches you how to build your own blog, the skills you learn there can be applied to freelancing as well, where you can create blogs for other people and charge them hundreds per month just as an example.
It can be very lucrative, and if you have that income as a kid, you will be very well off when you become an adult.
But enough about Wealthy Affiliate for now. The point is, either learning a new skill or by using a current skill, get out into the world and ask people if they want your services.
It’s the exact same as going door to door and asking people if they want their lawns mowed, except you can do everything online. Email potential people who would like your services and pitch what you can do to them.
This is much easier said than done, though.
If you’re shy and don’t want to talk to people and came to this blog post thinking that making money online would require no communication with others, well then I’m terribly sorry.
This method will require you to go out of your comfort zone.
You’re going to have to email people, phone them, or even go to them directly and ask them.
Some will say, “Yes! I want you to draw me a picture of a wolf or whatever,” while most will say, “Sorry, no thanks.”
Some might be rude and call you a scammer after receiving the end product and disliking it, and others will straight out ignore you.
If you’re going out to random people, most of them will not trust you as well, especially if you’re trying to sell your methods for the first time. You’ll have to build a few things yourself and create some sort of portfolio to showcase everything.
You’ll also have to figure out your prices. As a kid who’s just getting started, you don’t have to charge thousands. Sometimes you can even do some projects for free just to get people to know you and gain connections.
There’s actually a lot more that goes into freelancing than just this one post. But hopefully, this gives you an okay starting point where you can do some more research into freelancing.
If you’re able to pull freelancing off, you will undoubtedly be rewarded. You’ll be miles ahead of your classmates in terms of talking and communicating with others, job experience, and of course, money.
However, it’s all about sticking through failure and growing every time.
YouTube Channels, Income Over Time
Speaking about failure, let’s talk about YouTube channels!
YouTube is a popular idea of making money online for kids; especially gamer kids.
The thought of being able to record a few videos, post them on YouTube, and then earn money from them forever is exceptionally enticing. And for many YouTubers that have succeeded, it is really that way.
Think about some popular YouTubers like PewDiePie. He can create one video and instantly get a few million views. With this one video, YouTube ads will pay at least a thousand.
If we start incorporating things like him putting links in his video description to products in which people click on and buy things, he will earn even more money.
Then there’s sponsors, personal TV shows, and even more that he could do to make more money.
Many people have tried what PewDiePie has been doing and failed miserably.
You can’t just copy someone and expect to go viral, you need your own unique identity if you were to start a YouTube channel.
Although it’s significantly more difficult now to get up and running on YouTube and monetized, there is still significant opportunity for kids to earn money online through YouTube.
But things are different now. You can’t just post a random video and get views. You need to put out valuable content and focus around targeting a specific niche.
For example, if you record yourself playing the piano, keep it in a piano/music channel. Don’t mix it up with gaming content or everyday vlog content. You have to build yourself in a specific niche and generate a particular audience that follows you.
The content has to be valuable too. The content could be funny. It could teach someone how to do something. It could be motivating. But it just can’t be mediocre.
Watch videos yourself and see what interests you. See what you get bored by and learn to implement exciting elements into your videos and exclude the boring details.
Another extremely crucial part of success on YouTube is consistency. You can’t expect to earn money within 1 month on YouTube if you only made one video. Heck, you probably won’t see any money within the first month, even if you made 30 videos!
But the second month you might. In the third month, you might see your first $100. By the sixth month, you might see your first $1,000. To do this, you need to put out content all the time consistently, and eventually, they’ll snowball and stack your earnings.
These results depend on not just how many videos you produce, but the quality as well. Ideally, you also want to optimize your descriptions and titles for keywords so that you can get more views off of the YouTube search engine, too.
But this is getting complicated, isn’t it?
Just like freelancing, there are more elements involved than just posting videos. I could talk about SEO optimization, video editing, thumbnails, niche selection, and even more.
However, this post will become a few tens of thousands of words long if I do. So I will save some more of the YouTube information for some other blog posts.
Hopefully, this does give you an idea of another way you could make money online as a kid.
There is training that I would recommend on YouTube, though. Once again, I would have to recommend Wealthy Affiliate.
Even though Wealthy Affiliate is primarily a place to learn how to make money online from affiliate marketing via blogging, there is fantastic training on the platform on how to make money with YouTube plus a bunch of tools to help you along the way.
If you’re interested in learning more, see my full review of Wealthy Affiliate in the link below.
Social Media Influencer, The New Trend
Taking surveys, selling old stuff, starting a YouTube channel, and even selling your own skills have all been talked about on other blog posts quite heavily. But those blog posts are somewhat dated, and they don’t have many of the new methods of earning money online.
One of the new things that have popped out is social media influencing, specifically, using Instagram.
With the rise of e-commerce and the number of companies that are getting into social media marketing, a large number of people with large followings on Instagram are being contacted to create sponsored posts.
And since Instagram is one of the new things popular with the kids, there have been several young people who were able to create large followings and get paid to post specific posts.
It is entirely free to get into, and you could charge $100-$200 just for a single post depending on the quality of your Instagram page.
You could even earn from affiliate sales as well, where a company will give you money depending on how many sales they get.
If it’s free, what’s the catch?
Well, if you don’t already have a large following, it will take some time to grow a social page. You will have to post interesting pictures and videos every day, follow and un-follow other people, and make connections in the social world.
Again the key is consistency, but it will definitely take a few months before you have 10,000 followers, which many consider a bare minimum.
Then even after having that many followers, there’s no guarantee that a company will come and sponsor you. Luckily, we’re in a situation currently where there are more companies than social media influencers, but it won’t always be this way.
Blogging And Writing, Low Competition In Certain Niches
There is a surprisingly large number of people that don’t blog despite platforms like Wealthy Affiliate making it easier than ever.
If you’re a kid looking to get started online, blogging can be one of the best ways.
As a kid who’s looking to make money online, you might be looking for ways that you don’t have to talk or show your face directly. When I was a kid searching for online money-making methods, I was reading all these blogs on how to make money online to avoid doing things like door-to-door selling.
Now I’m on the other side. I’m the one writing these blog posts to help kids learn how to make money online instead of the one reading them.
But it was only until much later did I find out about blogging.
Even though blogging has become extremely popular, you can still start a blog now and reap the rewards later.
You want to find a niche that you are passionate and knowledgeable about and then help others by writing blog articles on a website you create. Then through advertisements and affiliate links, you could make a full-time income.
There are specific ways to go about blogging to maximize your success, and again, I can’t put down everything in one post.
I highly recommend checking out Wealthy Affiliate. Wealthy Affiliate is a site primarily designed for affiliate marketing via blogging, and you’ll have much more success at Wealthy Affiliate than by yourself.
Plus, when you sign up at Wealthy Affiliate, you can make two free websites in the beginning and see if you like the process.
The Entrepreneurial Spirit
If you have read other blog posts on how to make money online as a kid, you’ll notice that this post is very different. Instead of focusing on taking surveys and such, I talked a lot more about starting businesses and creating long term, full-time income.
There are many ways to make money online and lots of better ideas that I haven’t listed here. Why didn’t I list the better methods then?
Well, because I don’t know the methods. You will have to get creative and use your own head and skills to dig up ways to make money online. If you establish yourself inside of new untapped markets before anyone else finds out, then you’ll be digging gold with no competition.
Develop a new app, create your own digital marketing agency, or create a new website that gathers data from different sources. Those are just some ideas.
The point is to find something unique and something you are passionate about and solve a real-world problem before anybody else does it.
Way too many times, kids are being underestimated for their lack of experience or skills. As a kid, don’t be brought down by that, push yourself out there, and experience the failures.
You will be miles ahead of all your classmates who decide to be future entrepreneurs if you’re able to spend your school days creating businesses.
This post is just a starting point and to give you some ideas of what you could do.
If you want to go further than just making cents taking surveys and watching videos, you’re going to have to put in the extra work needed.
Do know that if you are a minor (under 18), there will be different struggles for you that many others may not have.
For example, some businesses you might want to open aren’t actually legal on your own, and you’ll have to get your company put up under your parents’ names.
Nonetheless, some kid entrepreneurs can get past these obstacles and succeed. It’s all about how resourceful you are. Not how much money and the funds you have, but how you’re able to make use of what you have.
Getting Your Feet Wet
